Week 21 Of A Pregnancy
Week 20 marks a new stage in pregnancy, as your baby has now entered their third trimester. Your baby is now roughly 6 and a half inches long and weighs approximately 11 ounces.
Appearance: At this stage, your baby still has some lanugo (fine white hair) covering their body to help keep them warm. Their eyes have fully developed and opened, although they are still seeing in black and white.
Movement: You should be feeling movement from your baby on a regular basis, as they are now roughly the size of a large banana. Your baby’s muscles have become more coordinated and they can now stretch and move easily inside the uterus.
Growth: At this point, your baby’s brain is continuing to grow rapidly, and new neural connections are being formed each day. His/her lungs and digestive system are maturing, and he/she is preparing for life outside the womb.
Your Baby’s Development: By week 20 of your pregnancy, your baby is well into their third trimester. They are now capable of responding to sound and light, and their sense of taste and smell are developing. His/her senses are all becoming more acute, allowing him/her to better differentiate between noise and pitch, and even recognize the voices of their parents.
Your Body: At this point, you might notice a decrease in energy and more difficulty sleeping due to the extra weight you are carrying. It is important to make sure you are still eating a balanced diet and getting plenty of rest.
Considerations: Make sure you take time to rest and do activities that help you relax and destress such as yoga and exercise. Also, consider talking to your doctor about any supplements that may benefit you and your baby during this stage of development. As your baby’s third trimester begins, take time to enjoy this special time and make sure you are taking care of yourself.
