IVF Cyprus

Last reviewed 2026-10-27

Cyprus is two jurisdictions, not one, and for this treatment the difference is the whole story. The Republic of Cyprus, in the south, is an EU member state and prohibits non-medical sex selection under its 2015 assisted reproduction law. Northern Cyprus, in the north, is where the clinics that advertise sex selection operate — and its legal position is the one we have been unable to document. Most pages about “IVF Cyprus” do not tell you which half they mean.

Why Cyprus became a fertility destination at all

Cyprus did not become one of Europe's busiest fertility destinations because of sex selection. It became one because of egg donation: short waiting lists, a large donor pool, treatment available to single women and older patients, and a two-to-four hour flight from most of Europe. For British patients in particular it is a familiar destination with English widely spoken and a long-standing medical-travel route. Sex selection arrived later and attached itself to an industry that already existed.

That history explains the search data. In the United Kingdom, `ivf cyprus` is searched far more than any sex-selection destination phrase — it is the established route, and gender selection is a question people ask once they are already on it.

What this means if you are considering it

Two practical consequences follow, and neither is a reason to rule the island out — they are reasons to ask sharper questions.

  1. Find out which side the clinic is on before anything else. A quote headed “Cyprus” tells you nothing about the applicable law. Ask for the clinic's full registered address and which authority licenses it.
  2. If it is the north, ask the clinic in writing to name the instrument it performs sex selection under, and whether any board approval applies in your case. We set out why on the legal page. A clinic that answers that question in writing has told you something useful; one that changes the subject has told you something more useful.

A detail worth knowing before you book: a clinic may perform PGT-A — which is routine and uncontroversial — and then share the full laboratory report, which contains the sex of each embryo. Whether that amounts to sex selection where the clinic operates is exactly the question the paperwork should answer and marketing never does.

Cost, and why the Cyprus number looks so low

Advertised Cyprus packages sit far below the published United States range, and the gap is real — but a package price and an itemised estimate are different documents. Before you compare them, put both into the same shape: one complete attempt including stimulation, collection, ICSI, culture, biopsy, testing of the number of embryos you are likely to have, freezing and one frozen transfer, then add medication and two sets of travel, because the transfer happens in a later cycle. The method is on the cost page and it changes the ranking more often than people expect.

Is gender selection legal in Cyprus?

It is prohibited for non-medical reasons in the Republic of Cyprus under Law 69(I)/2015. In Northern Cyprus the position is contested: clinics advertise the service, while other sources cite a regulation prohibiting it outside medical grounds with board approval. We could not obtain the official text.

What is the difference between North and South Cyprus for IVF?

They are separate jurisdictions with separate law and separate regulators. The south is an EU member state with a 2015 assisted reproduction statute; the north has its own regulations and is recognised only by Türkiye. A quote headed simply “Cyprus” does not tell you which applies.

Why is IVF in Cyprus so popular with British patients?

Short waiting lists for egg donation, treatment available to single and older patients, English widely spoken, and a short flight. It became a destination for donor IVF long before sex selection was associated with it.

How much does IVF in Cyprus cost?

Advertised packages are well below published US figures, but they vary in what they include. Compare complete attempts — medication, the number of embryos tested, the frozen transfer and two trips — rather than headline package prices.
