IVF Cost in the USA
Last reviewed 2026-10-27
Published third-party estimates put a US IVF cycle at roughly US$12,000–20,000 before medication, and US$20,000–30,000 out of pocket where embryo screening is included. Medication adds from a few thousand dollars to over ten thousand. Insurance coverage is the variable that matters most and it depends on your state and your employer — which is why two people at the same clinic can pay completely different amounts for identical treatment.
The published figures
| Item | Published estimate | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Base IVF cycle | US$12,000–20,000 | Before medication and before genetic testing |
| Cycle with embryo screening | US$20,000–30,000 out of pocket | Elective treatment is rarely covered |
| PGT-A genetic testing | US$3,500–7,500 | Depends on the laboratory and how many embryos are tested |
| Medication | A few thousand to over US$10,000 per cycle | Varies by protocol and by age |
These are third-party published estimates, attributed in the sources below. We are not a clinic and we do not publish prices of our own. US pricing varies more by metro area and by practice than almost any other country's, so treat these as a frame, not a quote.
Insurance is the whole question
In most countries the cost of IVF is a number. In the United States it is a negotiation, and the same treatment can cost you nothing or thirty thousand dollars depending on three things.
- Your state. A number of states mandate some form of infertility or IVF coverage, and the mandates differ in what they require, who they bind and how many cycles they cover. Several states have added or expanded mandates in recent years, so check the current position rather than an old summary.
- Your employer's plan. Mandates typically do not reach self-funded employer plans, which cover a large share of the workforce. Conversely, many large employers now offer fertility benefits voluntarily, often through a third-party administrator rather than the health plan itself.
- What is being treated. Diagnostic workup is more often covered than treatment; treatment more often than medication; and elective procedures such as non-medical sex selection are essentially never covered.
Before anything else, ask your plan administrator for the fertility benefit in writing: how many cycles, whether medication is included, whether pre-authorisation is required, and whether the clinic you want is in network. That document changes the decision more than any price list.
Why Americans travel, and when it actually pays
The United States is the most expensive place in the world for this treatment and the most permissive — no federal prohibition on sex selection, no marital-status restrictions, a large donor market. So Americans travel for one reason: price. Whether it pays depends on the honest comparison, which is rarely done.
- Price a complete attempt at home — everything through one frozen transfer, medication included.
- Price the same complete attempt abroad, with medication at the overseas clinic's written estimate.
- Add two long-haul trips for the overseas option, since collection and transfer are separate cycles.
- Ask both clinics for live birth per cycle started, for your age band, and work out the cycles implied.
- Compare the totals at two complete attempts, not one.
At US price levels the overseas option usually survives that test comfortably — the gap is large enough to absorb flights. The method is on cheapest country for IVF, and the eligibility question comes first: if you need donor eggs, some destinations are closed to you regardless of price.
Comparing a US quote against treatment abroad?
Send both. We will convert them into complete attempts with medication and travel included, and price a second cycle. If an introduction we make leads to treatment, we may be paid a referral fee.

Does insurance cover IVF in the USA?
It depends on your state, your employer's plan and what is being treated. Some states mandate coverage, but mandates generally do not reach self-funded employer plans. Ask your plan administrator for the fertility benefit in writing before you plan around it.
Why is IVF so expensive in the USA?
High clinic overheads and staffing costs, expensive patient acquisition, and a market in which treatment is frequently paid out of pocket rather than negotiated by a single payer.
Is it cheaper for Americans to have IVF abroad?
Usually, and by enough to absorb flights — but compare complete attempts with medication and two trips included, at two cycles rather than one, and settle eligibility first if you need donor eggs.
