Family Balancing
Last reviewed 2026-10-27
Family balancing means selecting the sex you do not already have. A couple with three sons choosing a daughter is the standard case. The procedure is identical to any other IVF sex selection — the difference is entirely in who is eligible. Many clinics in permissive countries will do family balancing while declining open sex selection, so the phrase is often the clinic's own ethical line rather than a legal category.
What clinics usually mean by it
There is no universal definition, which is why it matters to ask. The common criteria are:
- You already have at least one living child.
- All your existing children are the same sex.
- You are selecting the other sex.
- Some programmes add a minimum number of existing children, commonly two.
A first-time parent choosing a daughter does not meet any version of this definition. If that is your situation and a clinic describes its service as family balancing, establish early whether you qualify, because discovering it at the consent stage wastes a trip.
Why a permissive clinic would still draw a line here
In the United States there is no federal prohibition, so each programme sets its own policy. Some decline non-medical sex selection outright; some accept it without conditions; a substantial group sits in the middle and accepts family balancing only. The reasoning offered is usually that balancing responds to an existing family rather than specifying a first child, and that it is unlikely to contribute to population-level sex-ratio effects — the strongest of the evidence-based objections set out on the sex selection page.
You do not have to find that reasoning persuasive. You do have to know which category a clinic puts you in before you plan around it.
Does the term change the law?
No. Where non-medical sex selection is prohibited, family balancing is prohibited — it is a subset, not an exception. The UK statute bars practices designed to secure that a child is of one sex and makes no allowance for existing children; Canada's criminal provision likewise. Marketing occasionally implies the phrase unlocks something legally. It does not. See where it is legal.
What it does not change clinically
Your probability of success is unaffected by your reason for asking. It is still decided by how many healthy embryos the cycle produces and the coin flip on each one — and families who already have three children of the same sex are, statistically, no more likely to produce embryos of the other sex than anyone else. The run of three sons is not a pattern that continues, and it is not a pattern that corrects either. Each embryo is independent. The arithmetic is on this page and it applies unchanged.
This last point is the one people most often get wrong in both directions — some expect a correction that is “due”, others fear their family “only makes boys”. Neither is how independent events work, and both lead to the wrong budget.
What is family balancing?
Selecting the sex of a child you do not already have — for example, a couple with three sons choosing a daughter. The procedure is identical to other IVF sex selection; the difference is eligibility.
Do I qualify for family balancing?
Most programmes require at least one living child, all of the same sex, with the selection being for the other sex. Some require two. A first child does not qualify under any common definition.
Is family balancing legal where sex selection is banned?
No. It is a subset of non-medical sex selection, not an exception to it. Where the practice is prohibited, family balancing is prohibited.
Does having three children of one sex make the next more likely to be the other?
No. Each embryo is independent, at roughly even odds. A run of one sex neither continues nor corrects.
