Gender Selection USA
Last reviewed 2026-10-27
There is no federal statute prohibiting sex selection in the United States, which makes it the main lawful destination in the English-speaking world and the most expensive one. But “legal” here means “left to the clinic”: individual programmes set their own policy, and a meaningful number accept only family balancing or decline non-medical selection altogether.
Why the US position is a vacuum rather than a permission
Countries that permit sex selection by statute have usually considered it and decided. The United States has mostly not legislated in this area at all, so the practice sits in a space governed by professional guidance — principally the ethics opinions of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine — and by each clinic's own policy. Those opinions are influential and not binding.
The practical consequence is that the country's answer is not the answer you need. Two programmes in the same city can take opposite positions. Ask the specific clinic, early, and ask whether they restrict to family balancing.
The cost, stated plainly
Published third-party estimates put one IVF cycle with embryo screening in the United States at roughly US$20,000–30,000 out of pocket, with PGT-A about US$3,500–7,500 of that and medication — frequently excluded from headline figures — running from a few thousand to over US$10,000. Insurance rarely covers elective treatment. All of these are other people's published figures, listed on the cost page with their sources.
For patients travelling from the UK, Australia, Canada and Ireland this is the trade: the jurisdiction is clear and the price is the highest in the world. For many that clarity is worth paying for, particularly against a destination whose legal position cannot be documented.
What to ask a US clinic
- Do you accept non-medical sex selection, or family balancing only? What are your eligibility criteria?
- Euploid blastocysts per cycle started for my age band, from your own most recent full year.
- Live birth rate per euploid single frozen transfer, by age band — not pregnancy rate, not per transfer only.
- An itemised estimate including ICSI, the number of embryos tested, freezing, first-year storage and one frozen transfer — plus your medication estimate in writing.
- The price of a second cycle, and of a second transfer from frozen embryos.
- Which genetics laboratory you use and what accredits it.
Comparing a US quote against somewhere cheaper?
Send both. We will put them in the same shape — complete attempt, medication in, second cycle priced — and tell you what each is missing. If an introduction we make leads to treatment, we may be paid a referral fee.

There is no federal statute prohibiting it. Practice is governed by individual clinic policy and by professional ethics guidance, which is influential but not binding.

Generally not. It is elective, and insurers that cover fertility treatment usually exclude it.
